The Picasso to Warhol exhibit at the High Museum has been such a popular event for Atlanta, and here at APP, it’s been a year-long project. It has helped create thirteen new masters whose work, inspired by the exhibit, was featured at the museum yesterday! The opportunity to showcase and acknowledge the work of the children in the community has made a big impact. “It’s the first time my art is at the museum,” beamed one of the children. Dogwood students were seen giving hugs and sharing giggles. Their excitement resonated throughout the beautiful, sunny day. The story that unfolds from this exhibit is spectacular because it illustrates the work of the teachers and families too. It is obvious how dedicated our teachers and families are to this process of learning. We’re so thankful that the High welcomed us to let the work shine! Congratulations, Dogwoods!

Kyle Brooks, the Beltline Bears artist, has also shown concern for the raccoon he has belovedly named Jose after his visit with the Loblolly Pines teachers this week. They’re brainstorming ideas about art collaboration on the Atlanta Beltline! We haven’t seen Jose since so we’re hoping that it’s safe. The Cypress class and their families visited Los Amigos Tortilla Factory, a local family-owned business, on that special extra day of our leap year. It was especially nice to see Tom and Tommy, a father and son team, working together to give the children and their families a tour. Against all the fascinating machinery were the wonderful smiling faces of people that make the machines work and the tortillas delicious. Los Amigos donated boxes of tortillas so feel free to take some home. Maybe even grab some delicious veggies from the Farm Mobile every other Thursday!

APP goes into the community as well as inviting it in. Dave, one of Chattahoochee Nature Reserve Center’s animal rescue heroes, joined the Poplar morning meeting with two special guests- Ruby, a one-eyed screecher owl, and Pockets, an orphaned opossum. Dave also invited the other classes to meet the special animals. Children wondered about the animals’ families and learned their stories of rescue. The children, with all their excitement, kept their voices low so they would not scare Ruby and Pockets. What a great way to interact with animals that may live in our own backyards!

If it hasn’t been reiterated enough, here is it again: we love our community! APP is so grateful to be apart of Atlanta and have Atlanta be apart of our school!

The February art show focuses on the art of children in our shared space of APP and UUCA. The Dogwood class, in relation to their project work, have taken on the job of curating the APP Art Show. Their interests and ideas have materialized into tickets, invitations, and an upcoming art show opening. They also took on the responsibility of hanging the work of each class. The children were taken in small groups to curate. Each small group was faced with different challenges such as consistency, tools, and safety. Curators were given the opportunity to problem-solve and decide how to present each piece. A representative teacher of each class provided an idea of how they visualized their classroom’s work and collaborated with the Dogwood curators. The curators also learned how to document their own work of curating the show by taking pictures and drawing notes on their clipboards. The Dogwoods accomplished what they might consider adult work and learned it was at times difficult and maybe even stressful but well-worth it. It is apparent that the works of children is recognized and appreciated in this space, especially thanks to the Dogwood class. Thanks, curators!

He shared his knowledge and explained the different parts of a skeleton to the other children. More children became interested so the teachers borrowed a book from the library. The children studied photos of skeletons, muscles, and digestion. As the Cypress class ate their snacks, they asked themselves what goes in their mouths. They had made a connection about food and bodies. The conversation continued into morning meeting discussions. The children were eager to learn more. From these observations, many questions come up as researchers: What language do we use around food and dietary needs? (i.e. vegetarian, vegan) How do we show sensitivity to the dietary/physical/emotion needs of others? Why do we eat what we eat and why is it important to be aware of what we eat?
Children are a constant source of inspiration and surprise. They unravel mysteries daily as well as posing new ideas and questions that challenge thinking for each other and the teachers. The willingness to be adventurous, like trying the broccoli fresh from the garden, is a direct result from investigating their interests. Exploration opens so many doors and windows.

Everyone wore red in spirit of our Community Helper Day celebration. Firefighters from Station 8 of Dekalb County made a visit to our school today to explain safety fire drills- like calling 911- and showed us their new fire truck.
